Since 2018, Huma has been partnering with leading medical technology company Smith+Nephew to adapt our award-winning digital health app for orthopaedic surgery, with a recent program supporting evidence generation for their robotic knee replacement surgery system, CORI. Watch our video below, and discover more about this unique collaboration between Huma, Smith + Nephew and NHS ESNEFT. Supporting patients - a consultant in your pocket
For the patient, Huma is like having a digital consultant in their pocket, providing timely and accurate information and communication when they need it, with the reassurance that someone is looking out for them every step of the way.
Before surgery, the app gathers digital data and patient inputs, to establish a baseline of their overall health. This data continues to be collected post-operatively to give the orthopaedic consultant a better idea of overall patient progress.
Based on the data gathered, the post-surgical care team can quickly intervene if necessary - for example, to bring the patient in for an examination, adjust medication, or provide positive feedback and encouragement when things are going well.
Supporting clinical teams
<div class="quotebox-w-img"><blockquote class="quotebox-text">This is where we thought Huma was really gold dust. We have been able to see our patients recover in real time… and remind them that we’ve not forgotten about them.</blockquote><div class="quotebox-author-wrapper"><img class="quotebox-img" src="https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/630f8e2cb1a0c23e614b6a24/64afff55a272ea8b4c42699c_Tim%20circular.png" alt="Tim Parratt's headshot"><div class="quotebox-author-info"><p class="quotebox-w-img-author">Tim Parratt</p><p class="quote-box-role">Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust</p></div></div></div>
Huma’s health monitoring modules track weight/BMI, daily steps, symptoms, and medications. Patient-reported outcomes questionnaires (PROs) provide clinically validated insights into mobility, self-care,pain, discomfort and overall function (ePROs used include EQ-5D-5L, FJS Knee Score and the Oxford Knee Score).
All of this information is pulled through in near-real time to a web-based dashboard, giving care teams unprecedented oversight of the health and status of their patients.
Gathering real-world evidence for Smith+Nephew
The Huma app provides value for Smith+Nephew and their robotics registry, providing data on how Cori is performing in the real world.
<div class="quotebox-w-img"><blockquote class="quotebox-text">We are proud to partner with the team at ESNEFT around innovative technologies, both in the operating room through CORI surgical robotics, and in supporting patients before and after surgery with the Huma remote patient monitoring platform. Making more possible for the NHS, NHS staff and patients through innovation and data information is key to the success of NHS and industry collaboration.</blockquote><div class="quotebox-author-wrapper"><img class="quotebox-img" src="https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/630f8e2cb1a0c23e614b6a24/64b009735cbbec2b642c65bf_Si%20Tarry%20circular.png" alt="Si Tarry's headshot"><div class="quotebox-author-info"><p class="quotebox-w-img-author">Si Tarry</p><p class="quote-box-role">Managing Director Smith+Nephew UK, Ireland and Nordics</p></div></div></div>
This vital information provides a detailed picture of the health benefits for patients from robotic surgery and points towards where further improvements can be made. Real-world evidence can also reveal the efficiencies for care teams and give insights on health economics including length of stay, outpatient follow-ups, readmissions and repeat surgeries.
