The development of the digital virtual ward has seen patients being cared for at home, at scale. Smartphones and connected sensors, such as oximeters, monitor patients, transmitting data on their condition to their care providers, identifying and flagging changes in an individual’s wellbeing in the process.
Digital virtual wards enable carers to run their ward rounds at a glance of a screen and make contact with their patients proactively, minimising the need for unnecessary admissions. Evidence shows they can double clinical capacity, reduce the administrative burden of care while providing the right data at the right time to support clinical decision making.
